Bangladesh registered 261 more deaths from Covid-19 till 8am Saturday, taking the total number of death to 22,411.
This is the second highest number of Covid-19 deaths reported in the span of a single day.
The country recorded 8,136 new infections in the meantime taking the total number of people infected to 1,343,396, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Saturday.
The number of newly infected people has declined significantly compared to the previous day. Some 12,606 people contracted the virus on Friday.
The number of deaths per hour has increased four times in the last three months according to the data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The country has been witnessing more than 200 deaths every day for the last 14 days. On July 7, the death toll crossed 200-mark for the first time. 201 people died on that day.
The death rate now stands at 1.67 percent in the country, added the release.
The current positivity rate stands at 25.65 percent and the overall positivity rate stands at 16.64 percent.
Regarding the crisis of ICU beds Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Saturday said that Corona infection is getting worse day by day in the country.
Among the 261 deceased, 152 were men, and 109 were women. Of the victims, 257 died in different hospitals across the country, three died at home and one died on the way to the hospital.
A total of 101 deceased were from Dhaka division, 62 from Chattogram, 45 from Khulna, 16 form Mymensingh, 12 from Barisal, 10 from Rangpur, eight from Rajshahi and seven from Sylhet division.
A total of 31,714 samples were tested across the country till 8am Saturday.
During this period 16,383 Covid-19 patients have recovered. Up until now, a total of 1,188,820 people have recovered from the virus and the recovery rate stands at 88.49 percent.
As of Saturday, 4,294,317 people died of Covid-19 across the world and 202,576,760 have been infected so far, according to Worldometer.
