Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently inaugurated the country’s first expressway on Jatrabari-Mawa- Patchchar-Bhanga route. This marks a new era in the communication sector of the country and opens up countless opportunities for the economy.
Vehicles will be able to go straight to destinations without any interruption as there would be no traffic signal while side lines were constructed along the expressway for low speed vehicles for the movement of people in the neighbourhood. Moreover, it will curtail the travel time significantly as well.
The expressway is expected to significantly boost the country’s socio-economic development. It will also improve the quality of life for people living in the southern region of the country. Trade between different regions in the country will increase manifold.

The 55-km long expressway has all the modern facilities and was constructed in order to reduce travel time as well as to ensure smooth and comfortable journey for the people of 22 southwestern districts.
The expressway has eight-lanes in total, including four-lane main expressway and four service lanes for low speed vehicles. It will improve connectivity of the country’s southwestern part with the capital thereby having a significant impact on the economy of the southwestern region of the country.
It will particularly help the development of the Khulna and Barishal divisions. One of the biggest benefits of such a massive scale project is that it will lead to decentralization of the country. Currently, Bangladesh’s economy and infrastructure development is unevenly distributed with major cities like Dhaka and Chattogram vastly more developed than other regions.
In order to ensure sustainable development of the country, the government is working on the development of several different regions of the country. We applaud the government for its swift completion of the expressway. One can hope that this is one of the many milestones achieved by Bangladesh in the Mujib Year.
