Country’s cricket in shambles

Published : 01 Apr 2021 09:01 PM

Bangladesh’s current cricketing form is in shambolic state to say the least. The recent drumming against the Blackcaps in their own soil exposed the team’s lack in depth and execution in the top level cricket.

Kiwis whitewashed Bangladesh on both ODIs and T20Is series’ and made them look like Tigers without teeth. The visitors have now lost 32 out of 32 matches in New Zealand soil. They not only defeated Bangladesh but thumped them in all six matches they played in the series. The limited over formats are normally where Tigers play their best cricket, but both the series in New Zealand showed Tigers performance have declined in these formats as well.

Bangladesh were without some of their key players throughout the tournament with the likes of Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal (in the T20’s). However that is not an excuse for such horrendous performance throughout the series.

Team Bangladesh were not even competitive in any of the matches they played. Tigers suffered in every department of the game. This series also exposed that the country’s cricket might not be in a suitable position for the future as the current crop of players are not showing any signs of consistency or the level of performance needed  to take our cricket further. When all the ‘Big Five’ (Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mushfiqur Rahim) will retire, there are not enough players of their calibre in the pipeline, who will replace them.

The Black Caps have already made the statement with a relatively inexperienced side grabbing their opportunity in the absence of regular members and it is also important that the Tigers make a statement in the upcoming series’ in the absence of experienced cricketers.

In order to get our cricket back on track, Bangladesh will have to adopt a better approach and play proper cricket, both of which have been missing in the recently concluded series. The batting, bowling and even fielding department have been inconsistent, leading to Bangladesh being swept in both the three ODIs and T20Is.

All in all country’s cricket is in dire need of fixing. The cricket board should make a proper plan and set an apt domestic structure so that more talented players can come through from it. Players are needed to be nurtured properly, only then we will see consistency from them. Collective effort from players to cricket board members are needed to revive country’s cricket before it’s too late.
