‘Country has seen revolutionary change in eliminating gender inequality’

Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives MD Tajul Islam said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's firm and timely decision on women's empowerment has revolutionized the elimination of gender inequality in the country.

The minister also mentioned that sustainable development is not possible without involving women in the mainstream of development.

He made the comments while speaking as the chief guest at the awarding ceremony of Self-reliant Women 2022 on the occasion of International Women's Day organized by the Department of Local Government Engineering (LGED) at Agargaon in the capital on Tuesday.

The minister said that although women have lagged far behind in various fields including education and economy in the past, the country has come a long way in eliminating gender inequality due to the strong leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. 

“Women are being established in different sectors according to their own qualifications. Our country has achieved unprecedented success in women empowerment. There has been a revolutionary change in the 

elimination of gender inequality,” 

he said.Tajul Islam further said that the current government has ensured the participation of women in all sectors of national life including education, politics, administration, defense, law enforcement agencies. 

The minister lauded the work of LGED in adding a new dimension to women's empowerment by expanding women's participation in construction work, savings activities, training, leadership development, protection of women's rights and participation in social activities.

At the same time, addressing all the engineers of LGED, the minister said that the project work has to be completed within the stipulated time while maintaining the quality of all development works. He also directed the senior officials to monitor these activities regularly.

On the occasion, the Local Government Minister handed over LGED honors and cash prizes to 11 best self-reliant women in three categories.

Helal Uddin Ahmed, Senior Secretary, Local Government Department was the special guest at the function presided over by Sheikh Mohammad Mohsin, Chief Engineer, LGED. Senior officials of Local Government Department and LGED and representatives of development partners were present at the occasion.

This year's theme for International Women's Day is "For a sustainable future, gender equality is para mount today."
