CoU protests communal violence

Teachers, officers, employees and the unit of Bangladesh Chattra League at Comilla University strongly protested the recentcommunal attacks on Hindus in different places across the country on Thursday.

They formed a human chain in front of the Bangabandhu Sculpture around 12:00pm, demanding security of the minorities and exemplary punishment of the culprits involved in the attacks.

Comilla University Teachers Association has organized the demo while teachers,Banagubandhu Parishad (Nandi-Julhas section), officers, employees and the unit BCL activists took part under the banners of their organizations’ names.

‘We have failed to provide security to the minorities, we do not want to live more bearing the shame of this failure,’ said Professor Asaduzza­man, the university's treasurer.

‘Whether it is extremism, sectarianism or terrorism, all this comes from family.Family,therefore, should be more diligent in education,’ Asaduzzaman added.

Addressing the Home Minister, DrDulal Chandra Nandi, president of a Bangabandhu Parishad fraction, asked,hesaid on the dayfollowing the incident at Cumillathat the perpetrator had been identified. Then why the culprit has not been arrested yet. is the administration waiting for a message?

The president of both Comilla iversity Teachers Association and the demonstration Professor Md. Shamimul Islam urged the Prime Minister and the administration to arrest those involved inthe incidents immediately and demanded exemplary punishment of them.

Demanding crossfire killings of those who involved in such communal violence, Eleas HossainSabuj, the unit BCL president said, ‘the attacks occur and we protest repeatedly, but no progress have been seen. All this happens because no exemplary action has been taken so far. Police should kill them in crossfire.’

Public Administration department chairman Dr Rashidul Islam Sheikh, English dept teacher Md. Habibur Rahman, Employee Council president Deepak Chandra Majumder, Employee Association general secretary Mijanur Rahman,among others,spoke at the protest.

CoU registrar (additional in-charge) Professor. Abu Taher, teachers’ association general secretary and Proctor DrKazi Md. Kamal Uddin, teachersand students from several departments and others attended the event.
