Air planes are to be boarded after going through the proper procedures. Acquiring of air tickets too has to be done through appropriate channels and from designated personnel. But recently the case has flipped on the other side, people can easily acquire air tickets for free and as a result of this airline companies are losing revenues. Recent reports published in this daily say that due to indiscriminate corruption of some crooked officials of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the national flag carrier has come back to its original record of incurring losses after a brief period of gaining profit.
Moreover, different level Biman officials have acquired 45 thousand international and domestic air tickets free of cost. This has resulted in huge losses for the state-owned organisation. This is a disaster in terms of human resources management on the part of Biman. The state-owned organisation should have kept a better hold on the reins of its officials to prevent such things from taking place. Previously, such incidents have been seen, but just because it is something owned by the state does not mean there is scope for corruption to take place.
On another note, some tickets are being acquired by said officials with very high commission rates. Moreover, reports say that officials oftentimes say that the tickets are for family excursions abroad but the fact is that they sell those tickets to outsiders.
This is truly saddening that the people of the country who are in higher position are misusing their authoritative powers for their own self interest. The authorities concerned should take note of such incidents and take firm actions to stop through proper penalisation of the corrupt officials. The Anti-Corruption Commission should also pay special attention so that these sorts of incidents do not occur in future.
