Coronavirus cases, deaths rising in Bangladesh

The government on Saturday confirmed 636 fresh cases of coronavirus, eight deaths and 313 recoveries from the disease COVID-19 overnight.

With that, the number of total cases rose to 13,770 in Bangladesh including 214 deaths and 2414 recoveries, additional director general for health Prof Nasima Sultana said at the daily briefing.

She said they had tested 5465 samples for the virus in 35 RT-PCR labs across Bangladesh during the last 24 hours till Saturday 8am.

All the deceased were male. Two of them were between the ages of 71 and 80, two between 61 and 70, one between 51 and 60, two between 41 and 50, and one between the ages of 31 and 40, she said.

Bangladesh first confirmed the outbreak on March 8 and the first death on March 18.
The mortality rate of the closed cases is 8.2 percent while the recovery rate 91.8 percent so far, Prof Nasima said.
However, the mortality rate is 1.5 percent and the recovery rate 17.5 percent against the total number of identified patients, she said.

She also presented a division-wise tally of total coronavirus patients in briefing and said Dhaka topped with 9,177 patients - 58.28 percent in Dhaka city and 23.79 percent from the rest of the division.

The Dhaka city and Narayanganj remained the hotspot of the virus spread.
Other divisions include 576 patients were detected in Chattogram division, 163 in Sylhet division, 263 in Rangpur division, 211 in Khulna division, 400 in Mymensingh division, 130 in Barishal division and 153 in Rajshahi division.

Naryanganj has the highest number of patients after Dhaka city.
The additional director general said in the past 24 hours, 196 people have been taken to isolation while 1,755 home and institutionally quarantined.

Currently, 37,183 people are quarantined across Bangladesh – including 1,755 newly-quarantined individuals. A total of 171,222 people have completed their time under quarantine.

She said they have the capacity to accommodate 8,634 people at 601 isolation wards and 30,955 people at 615 institutional quarantine facilities.

A new guideline for the people with disabilities has been added to the list of health directorate’s Covid-19 guidelines.
Prof Salima also suggested dengue testing if anyone reports high fever, as this is officially the dengue season in Bangladesh.
