Coronavirus cases cross 20,000, deaths 298

The number of coronavirus cases surged to 20,065 on Friday with the detection of 1,202 new patients in the last 24 hours, according to the government bulletin.

During the period till 8am, 15 more patients died of Covid-19, taking the total death toll to 298 since the detection of first cases on March 8.

Additional director general for health Prof Nasima Sultana in the bulletin said they had tested 8,582 samples, the highest in a single day, at 41 authorised laboratories across the country during the time.

The recovery count also rose to 3,882 after 279 patients were discharged from hospitals overnight.
Bangladesh confirmed the first coronavirus death on March 18, ten days after the detection of the first COVID-19 cases.
Globally, over 4.44 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and 302,493 have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2.
Currently, 46,805 people are now quarantined across Bangladesh. The authorities placed 259 new individuals suspected of having Covid-19 into isolation, bringing the total to 31,165 after 1,489 left.

The government earlier extended general holidays till May 30 and asked people to stay where they are during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr due to the rise of new infections.

Businesses have been allowed to reopen with conditions of maintaining health and hygiene to prevent the virus.
