Coordination among service agencies needed to resolve waterlogging in Ctg: Mayor

Published : 30 Jul 2025 08:48 PM

Chattogram City Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain has commented that coordinated action is needed by all service agencies concerned to resolve waterlogging in Chattogram .

He made this comment at a coordination meeting of service agencies in Chattogram  to resolve waterlogging in the city at the CCC office in Tiger Pass on Tuesday.

CCC mayor received the opinions of the service agencies to resolve the problems of important points in the city in terms of waterlogging and gave directions on what to do to resolve waterlogging.

The mayor said, “I am trying to work with all the service agencies. However, if we want to get results in these three months, if you want to keep the people comfortable, then these three months will have to be done in a continuous process. When I give you the instructions and present the people's opinions to you, you will have to complete them. But the work cannot be stopped when I leave.  The canals and drains should be kept clean in a continuous process.”

He said, “We have to do the work of the Oxygen Road from Muradpur. I think the work of the CDA's Hajipara Road Drain there is going a little slowly. If the CDA does the work of the road along with the drain there, then it will be a full-pledge work. Chaktai Canal is very important.”

Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) Chief Engineer Kazi Hasan Bin Shams said that dressing will have to be done downstream of Karnaphuli so that water is removed quickly. The CDA's waterlogging project resolution project is progressing rapidly. The project will play an important role in resolving waterlogging in the city.

Shahriar Khaled, the mayor's waterlogging advisor, said, the problem of waterlogging is solvable.  A proper action plan needs to be adopted and implemented. If CDA can make the sluice gates fully functional, it will play a helpful role in reducing waterlogging. If the water flow is normal by removing soil from the canals and drains, there will be no waterlogging in Chattogram .

Former Chairman of IEB Chattogram  Engineer Delwar Hossain said, water was seen accumulating on the roads in some areas due to heavy rain and tidal water on Monday. However, the good news is that earlier water used to remain in the Agrabad commercial area for four to five days. Now I have seen that after you cleaned that box culvert, there is a benefit that has happened. Earlier, the water from both sides, but the water from the other side of that Commerce College and the water from the Commerce Commercial Area, used to come together. Now this water has not come together. There was a dry area in the middle. The City Corporation has to work on such technical areas to reduce waterlogging.

CCC Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Muhammad Touhidul Islam, Secretary Md. Ashraful Amin, Chief Education Officer Dr. Kissinger Chakma, Chief Engineer Farhadul Alam, Chattogram  WASA Chief Engineer Maqsud Alam, Supervising Engineer Ariful Islam, CDA Chief Engineer Hasan Bin Shams, CDA Executive Engineer and Project Director Ahmed Moinuddin, Bangladesh Water Development Board Executive Engineer and Project Director Shawkat Ibne Shahid, Supervising Engineer of Power Development Board AKM Mamunul Bashri, District Administration Office Representative Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Jannatul Ferdous and representatives of various service organizations were present.
