Leaders of the Road Safety Foundation on Monday urged people to drive vehicles at a controlled speed during Eid-ul-Fitr to prevent road crashes.

In a joint statement, the foundation leaders observed reckless driving as one of the major reasons behind frequent accidents.

Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to be celebrated in Bangladesh on April 22. The government holidays for Shab-e-Qadr and Eid-ul-Fitr will start on April 19, when a huge rush of home-goers is expected. The holidays will end on April 24, depending on the moon sighting.

RSF leaders estimated that around one crore people would leave the capital to celebrate the festival with near and dear ones outside Dhaka.

Along with this, around five crore people would travel from district to district with the same aim, they said.

Due to a shortage of transportation, people travel during festival times in haste, risking their lives, which causes road crashes, they said. One wrong decision can cost the life and all the dreams of a family, the leaders said.

The foundation leaders urged the drivers, their assistants, and the passengers to remain careful while driving during Eid to avoid crashes.

The vehicle owners, the statement continued, should also encourage the drivers to drive their vehicles at a controlled speed. They urged the authorities concerned to broadcast messages in this regard.

The statement was signed by RSF chairman and Dhaka University sociology department supernumerary professor AI Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, vice chairman professor Hasina Begum, security expert Ferdous Khan, executive director Saidur Rahman, and deputy executive director Md Toufiquzzaman.
