Construction work of rail bridge over Jamuna begins on Bangabandhu’s birthday

Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujon has said that the construction works of the Bangabandhu Railway Bridge on the river Jamuna is likely to be inaugurated on March 17, at the birth centenary of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

While talking to the journalists after visiting the proposed site the bridge in Sirajganj on Tuesday, the minister said that due to a single, parallel rail tract on the Bangabandhu Bridge, movement of train through the bridge is being hampered and the bridge is also not suitable for carrying loaded, heavy wagons through Bangladesh-India. So, considering every aspects, step has been taken to construct a separate railway bridge at the northern side of Bangabandhu Bridge.

He mentioned, all the processes including site selection and invitation of the tender for the construction of the bridge has been completed and now just to wait to start the work. On March 17 at the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Shiekh Mujibur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate the construction works of the bridge which is likely to be finished by next four-year.

Nurul Islam Sujon after visiting the western part of Bangabandhu Bridge, rail station and surrounding areas, said that the government was working to bring all people of the country under the service of railway. As a part of the programme, a direct rail tract will be constructed from Sirajganj to Bogura to ease trouble of the passengers of northern region of the country.

Dr. Faruk Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner of Sirajganj and senior government officials were present during his visit.
