Construction work of a modern slaughtering house of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) will begin in February.

Aiming to ensure hygiene while slaughtering animals and supply of safe meat to the consumers, KCC has taken the project at a cost of Taka 83 crore, a KCC official said on Thursday.

“It was decided at a meeting between KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque and LDDP officials in 2019,” the official said, adding that such modern slaughtering houses will also be constructed in Chattogram and Rajshahi cities with the financial help of the World Bank.

Talking to BSS, Veterinary Surgeon Dr Peru Gopal Biswas said the project will be built on 100 acres of lands at Rajbandh area in the south city area. Construction work will begin in next month after completion of the tender process, he added. The project was scheduled to be started on January 1, 2021 and its tenure was up to December 31, 2024, he said, adding that but it was not possible to start the construction work due to corona virus pandemic.

Dr Golam Rabbani, Chief Technical Coordinator of the project, highlighted the salient features of the house along with its implementation and operational process.

After completion of the project, there will be no bad smell in the city and its dwellers will get safe meat, he added.

When contacted, KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque said time has come to strengthen the local government institutions and enable them to combat the spread of different types of diseases like anthrax.

If modern slaughtering houses can be set up in the urban and rural areas, many biogas plants could be established and the wastes of animals could be managed properly, he added.
