We urgently need integrated initiatives to conserve wildlife and biodiversity. If forests and wildlife are put in danger, human civilisation will be in peril. Therefore, forests and wildlife must be conserved to save human civilisation.

Forests in the country, provides shelter to many species of plant and animal. Trees absorb tons of carbon dioxide every year and slow down climate change along with producing oxygen.   Forests are called the lungs of nature because they are the source of oxygen in the atmosphere. They also maintain the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. That is why forests are called green lungs.

There is no alternative to everyone’s participation in the effective implementation of forest and wildlife conservation programmes. However, we are worrying that more wild animal species will become extinct due to various threats including poaching, habitat loss and overuse of natural resources.

Besides, depletion of the biodiversity everyday is also threatening wild life. If this trend continues, they will be disappearing fast from the country’s forests and jungles in near future. Besides, many species of wild animal are on the endangered list because of the constant shrinking of forest lands dur to settlement and human habittations within the forest lands, conversion of forest lands into agricultural lands and various development activities.

There is no alternative to everyone’s

 participation in the effective

 implementation of forest

and wildlife conservation programmes

A section of dishonest people along with local influentials have been felling trees and hills and polluting rivers in many ways which are destroying the places where animals used to live and drink water. Apart from the government, different organisations working for stopping deforestation and killing of wild animals organise various events, including human chain, songs, recitation, acting and animal painting for creating mass awareness on wildlife conservation.

But the killing and trafficking of wild animals and deforestation continue under the very nose of the authorities concerned every day. If influential people continue grabbing forests, we will fail to protect wildlife. Without conserving forests and bringing the culprits under punishment, we will not be able to protect wildlife.

All must realise that it is an urgent task now to save wildlife as it is the constitutional obligation to save them. Wild animals should be protected and wildlife trapping, killing and hunting should be stopped alongside ensuring their food security and habitat.

The wild animals are supposed to live in the forest but when their habitats are grabbed by people, how they will survive there? The destruction of wildlife has also reduced the distance between humans and the wild creatures or animals. The wild animals have to be conserved in the interest of both present and future generations as they play a pivotal role in sustainable development of the nation.

It is urgently needed for a wildlife census to enumerate the wild animals in our forests that are threatened by climate change, poaching and habitat loss. A national consensus is a must to conserve wildlife so that no animals will disappear. However, many areas of our country may face serious disaster as unscrupulous influential quarters continue destroying forests and cutting the hills in gross breach of environmental laws.

Deforestation and hill cutting are still going on unabated in the name of housing as the demand for plots and flats in the hill area is very high. Many residential and commercial buildings, resorts and hotels have been developed, cutting down hills over the last two decades, with the authorities concerned turning a blind eye to this mindless act. Such unabated deforestation and hill cutting posed a serious threat to the environment in the hilly region. These forests and hills will face serious situation in future if ‘effective steps’ are not taken to check their ruination. The government must take necessary steps to stop hill cutting and deforestation and bring culprits to book immediately.
