The government's recent advancements have brought transformative changes to the lives of North Channel Union's residents in the Faridpur District.
Situated on the Padma River's eastern bank, this region was historically accessible only by boat due to the lack of roadways. Locals navigated agricultural fields on foot and transported crops using basic methods like horse carriages. The Local Government Department (LGED) played a pivotal role in driving this progress.
During the fiscal year 2017-2018, LGED initiated a call for tenders aimed at constructing roads to enhance the rural infrastructure of the North Channel Union. The primary objective was to alleviate the difficulties faced by the isolated residents of Char areas. The tender encompassed the creation of multiple culverts, bridges, earthfills, and brick-paved roads.
Fast forward four years to 2023, the endeavors in rural development have materialized, resulting in the denizens of the four wards on the eastern bank of Padma River in North Channel Union now reaping the benefits of expanded and more conspicuous roadways. The completed project involves a 13.5-kilometer High Bituminous Bound (HBB) road, amounting to a cost of Tk 11 crore 98 lakhs. Furthermore, a new HBB road spanning 10 kilometers is presently under construction, with an estimated cost of Tk 7 crore 42 lakh.
The area's transformation is so remarkable that it could easily be mistaken for a tourist destination.
The inhabitants of the North Channel grasslands are expressing both astonishment and gratitude for the recent addition of roadways, which have substantially eased the transportation of crops and goods. After half a century of living without such vital infrastructure, many had not foreseen this development and are now embracing the convenience of vehicular travel.
In times past, save for the monsoon season, individuals had to rely on trawlers from the city or motorcycles to access certain areas. The presence of these newly constructed roads renders such practices obsolete. Additionally, the students in the region now have expedited access to schools and madrasas for their education. In cases of illness, residents can promptly reach the city for superior medical care.
Mofazzel Hossain, the Chairman of North Channel Union, has conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to the Local Government Engineering Directorate for their efforts in establishing a visible 7-kilometer road, along with a series of bridges and culverts in the previously isolated four wards of Amar Ward. This transformation has turned the Padma River's banks into a suburban environment, significantly benefiting the local populace. As the head of the union, he earnestly extends his gratitude to the local engineering directorate.
Assistant Engineer Shamsul Alam from Faridpur Sadar Upazila reported that numerous challenges were surmounted to render this secluded township conducive to communication networks. Despite the absence of an efficient road system for transporting construction materials to the region, the team successfully completed 13.5 kilometers of road construction, with another 10 kilometers still in progress. There is a prevailing sense of optimism that the remaining work will be finalized in the very near future.
