Regional and global comprehensive approach is needed to prevent violent extremism as transnational reach of extremists has become a threat to mankind. Speakers came up with this remark while addressing at a national conference on Preventing Violent Extremism at the International Convention City Bashundhara in the capital on Monday.
In her inaugural speech, Speaker of Bangladesh Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said, “This is the first time we have organised a national conference on preventing terrorism. Members from different groups including teachers, students, police officials, youths, media and indigenous groups have participated in this conference. Now, we have to reach news at the grassroots levels.”
She said, “Radicalism is a global problem. Almost all countries in the world face the threat of extremism. It is an individual enemy as well as enemy for mankind.” She also said, “No one is born as a terrorist and understanding terrorism is not the same as understanding terrorists. So, we have to address the reason behind the prolonged and unresolved cause of terrorism.”
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller said, “The US government is proud to be one of Bangladesh’s strongest security partners. We work together on many challenges that face our two great nations including violent extremism.” He said, “An effective counterterrorism strategy requires a comprehensive approach. Governments across the world increasingly understand that though law enforcement is essential, but may not be the only solution. By themselves, the police cannot prevent the pursuit of ideological goals through violence. That is why it is so important to see law enforcement embracing civil society partners in a spirit of collaboration.”
Miller also said, “Over the past two years, we have helped many civil-society groups working with local communities and institutions enhance their capacity to prevent violent extremism. These programs have reached more than 10,000 Bangladeshis through a wide variety of activities.”
Residual Coordinator of UNRCO Mia Seppo said, “Transnational reach of extremist group is becoming a great threat to mankind. It is not possible to prevent violent extremism without coordinated efforts. This is a battle that we cannot win alone.” International Relation Affairs Advisor to PM Dr Gowher Rizvi said, “About three years ago IS wanted to create an unstable environment in the country. But their efforts went in vain as our police, intelligence and counter terrorism units always remained alert. Now, peaceful situation is prevailing across the country.”
He also said, “Terrorism is a threat indeed. We have to remain alert all the time so that the terrorists cannot over power us.” In his welcome speech, Additional Commissioner of Police Md Monirur Islam urged all the stakeholders to select a strategy to prevent violent extremism.
