About 150 sugarcane cultivators under Darshana Cerew and Company Sugar Mills area have cultivated intercropping different vegetables, dal and species with sugarcane this year. They are getting fertilizers, seeds and pesticide support from Bangladesh Sugar Crop Research Institute for cultivating the mixed crops with sugarcane.
It may be mentioned here, the farmers have been cultivating maize and mustard with sugarcane.
They are becoming eager to cultivate sugarcane through this method and increasing their earning sources.
Sirazul Islam Moni, a farmer of Belgachhi in Chuadanga Pourasabha area of the district told this correspondent, he has cultivated potato as intercropping with sugarcane on 1 bigha 5 kathas of land this year.
He has expected that after selling potatoes he will receive t 70,000. After harvesting potatoes another crop will be cultivated on the land.
Sugarcane Cultivator Saidur Rahman of village Utholy in Jibannagar Upazila of the district said, he has cultivated cauliflower with sugarcane on two bighas of land this season.
In the meantime, he has sold cauliflower a total of tk. 30,000. He hopes that about tk. 70,000 will get to sell cauliflower in future.
Aktar Hossain, a farmer in Sadar Upazila of the district said, he has cultivated onion with sugarcane on 1 bigha of land, produced about 70 mounds of onion, sold it and got tk. 70,000. Dr. Md. Abu Taher, Chief Scientific Officer and Project Director of Bangladesh Sugar Crop Research Institute, said the limitation of the project was fixed for three years by Agriculture Ministry but due to good achievement the project limitation has been re-fixed for one year more.
