Comedian Anis dies at 78

Noted comedian and actor Anisur Rahman, popularly known as Anis, died at the age of 78. He breathed his last at his Tikatuli residence on Sunday night.
Bangladesh Film Artists Association President Misha Shawdagar confirmed the news. Anis was suffering from old-age complications for long. The actor’s remains will be taken to his ancestral home at Ballabpur village in Chhagalnaiya Upazila in Feni on Monday following a funeral prayer. He will be laid to rest at his family graveyard in the evening.

The first namaj-e-janaza of the veteran actor was held at Tikatuli Jameh Mosque at 9 O’clock Monday morning.Later, his body was taken to Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) where his second janaza was held around 11:00am. Anis’ body was then taken to his birth place in Ballabpur village under Chhagal Naiya Police Station of Feni where he was buried after his third namaj-e-janaza.

Anis began his career as an actor in comic role in 1960 with the film ‘Bishkanya.’ However, the film was never released. His first released film was ‘Ei to Jibon’ in 1963 directed by Zillur Rahman. Then, he never looked back and performed over 250 films. Anis acted in many programmes on Bangladesh Television since its inception. He was a theatre actor too. He rose to fame in the genre playing the character Golam Hossain in the play ‘Nawab Sirajuddoula.’
