A college teacher in Sharankhola upazila of Bagerhat has alleged that his home was attacked, vandalised, and looted. The complaint was revealed during a press conference held at Sharankhola Press Club on Wednesday afternoon.
In a written statement, Md Shafiqul Islam Russell, Assistant Professor of Khulna Government Women’s College, claimed that his house near Rajoir bus stand and land belonging to Anwar Hossain Secondary School are the subject of an ongoing court case. Although the court had issued an injunction on the disputed land, on Tuesday morning the head teacher of the school, along with several other teachers, students, and 70 to 80 outsiders, allegedly carried out the attack.
According to the allegation, the attackers first broke down fencing around the house, then forced open the doors, damaged furniture, and looted valuables including gold ornaments, cash, household items, and two cows. They also allegedly assaulted his cousin, Nazrul Islam Biswas, and Nazrul’s wife, Mahima Akter. Nazrul, seriously injured, was admitted to Sharankhola Health Complex before being transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. A written complaint has since been filed at Sharankhola Police Station.
Denying the allegations, school head teacher Md Afzal Hossain said, “Russell’s grandfather sold the land to the school long ago. All records are in the school’s name. Yet Russell was forcibly occupying it. The school authority has now taken control.”
Sharankhola Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shahidullah confirmed, “We have received complaints from both sides. The matter will be investigated, and legal action will follow.”
