The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized a huge consignment of illegal current nets and thread reels worth Tk 39.15 crore during a special operation in Munshiganj.

Acting on a tip-off, members of Coast Guard Station Pagla carried out the raid on Sunday around 4:00pm in the Binodpur Dingabhanga area of Panchsar, Munshiganj.

During the operation, Coast Guard personnel searched six net-manufacturing factories and two warehouses, recovering 1.11 crore metres of banned current nets along with 60,000 thread reels used for making the nets.

Officials estimated the total value of the confiscated items at Tk 39.15 crore.

Later, the seized nets and thread reels were destroyed in the presence of the Senior Fisheries Officer.

Lieutenant Commander Syam-ul-Haq said the Coast Guard will continue such drives to safeguard the country’s fisheries resources.
