The Bangladesh Coast Guard seized more than 20 tonnes of banned polythene bags worth an estimated Tk24.02 crore during a special drive in Narayanganj on Wednesday, officials said.
In a press release, Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Suzan said the operation was carried out at around 6:30am in the Shibu Market area by personnel from Coast Guard Station Pagla, acting on a tip-off.
During the operation, Coast Guard members searched two suspicious trucks and recovered 20,020 kilograms of banned polythene bags with an estimated market value of Tk24.02 crore.
The drivers and their helpers were released after providing written undertakings, while the trucks were also released, the statement said.
The seized polythene was later handed over to the Department of Environment in Narayanganj for destruction in accordance with the law.
The Coast Guard said it would continue such drives across the country to curb the production, transportation and distribution of banned polythene products and help protect the environment.
