Eight fishermen stranded in the Bay of Bengal for three days have been rescued by members of the Coast Guard (CG), according to a statement issued on Monday.

The fishing trawler, FB Mayer Doa, left for the sea on August 14 with eight crew members on board. It suffered a mechanical failure in mid-sea, leaving the fishermen adrift without means to return, the statement said.

Lt. Commander Siam-Ul-Haq, media officer of the Coast Guard, said the stranded crew were finally able to contact authorities on August 17 when their boat came within mobile network range. One of the fishermen called the CG emergency helpline (16111), prompting an immediate response.

A patrolling CG team located the trawler near buoy No-5 of the Mongla Fairway and successfully rescued all eight fishermen. They were given first aid and food before being towed to safety at the Harbaria riverbank.

The Coast Guard has urged fishermen to ensure their vessels are in proper working condition and remain in contact with emergency services while at sea.
