Coast Guard nets 19 in St. Martin's crackdown

In a targeted special operation, the Bangladesh Coast Guard has arrested 19 fishermen and seized an illegal artisanal trawling boat along with banned fishing gear in the waters near St. Martin's Island .

The raid was conducted by the Coast Guard ship 'Shyamol Bangla' on Friday night (November 7, 2025) around 10 pm, based on secret intelligence received about illegal fishing activity in the southwestern sea area of Chhera Island, St. Martin .

During the operation, authorities confiscated an illegal artisanal trawling boat. A subsequent search led to the discovery of 1,200 meters of banned Thai nets, valued at approximately 15 thousand taka, and the arrest of the 19 fishermen on board .

Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq, the Coast Guard Media Officer, confirmed the details in a press release on Saturday afternoon. He stated that legal proceedings are now underway against the seized boat, nets, and the detained fishermen .

He further emphasized the Coast Guard's ongoing commitment, stating"Such operations of the Coast Guard will continue in the future to conserve the country’s fisheries resources and protect marine biodiversity" .
