A new initiative has been taken by the pediatric surgery department of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Keeping in mind the slogan 'Operation in the morning, rest in the afternoon', the hospital is going to launch a new day care surgery service which will ensure quick operations and treatment for children. The programme will officially begin on August 1st.
Doctors said that through this initiative, children will be provided with various types of surgeries such as circumcision, hernia, hydrocele, correction of birth defects, and many other medical services. In particular, it will reduce hospital pressure for children and ensure timeliness in their treatment.
This operation will be performed on the first Sunday of every month, the second Tuesday of the month, and the third Thursday of the month through the outpatient department of the Department of Pediatric Surgery.
Professor Dr. Harun Ur Rashid, head of the Department of Anesthesia at CMCH, said that there is a lot of patient pressure in every ward of the hospital. Especially, there are more patients in pediatric surgery and general surgery. But the overall capacity of the hospital to handle this pressure is insufficient compared to the need.
Therefore, keeping children in mind, a new work is being started in the pediatric surgery department under the theme of "operation in the morning, rest in the afternoon". Through this, the suffering of pediatric surgery patients will be reduced. They will receive treatment faster, he added.
Dr. Md. Golam Habib, head of the hospital's pediatric surgery department, said that due to the additional patient pressure, it is not possible to operate on many pediatric patients on time.
Now, the new service is being launched by setting up two tables in collaboration with the anesthesia department. All preparations have already been completed. However, there is a shortage of anesthesiologists. Hopefully, this service can be launched soon.
It is known that the pediatric surgery department of CMCH currently has 40 approved beds. However, the number of beds was increased to 76 at the initiative of the ward. However, more patients are admitted regularly than the beds. This department treats various surgical diseases and conditions of children, especially those requiring surgery due to birth defects, injuries, and other diseases.
At the same time, this pediatric surgery department also has special treatments such as neonatal surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and urological surgery. Currently, against 2,222 beds, 3,200 to 3,500 patients are admitted at any given time at CHMEC Hospital.
