CMC Hospital burn unit construction to begin next year

Chinese team visits proposed site

A four-member delegation of Chinese government and Sheikh Hasina Burn Unit Head Professor Samant Lal Sen with CMC Hospital team held a discussion on the implementation of the Burn Unit of Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital and visited the place of Burn Unit.  The Chinese authorities expressed their interests in starting the work as soon as possible. They want to know about DPP approval.

The Chinese delegation has agreed to start work on the burn unit of Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital in early 2024.

CMC Hospital director Brigadier General Shamim Hasan told reporters after the meeting of the Chinese delegation with the director of CMC Hospital on Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, Professor Samant Lal Sen said that this project is a special priority project of the Prime Minister and has requested the concerned to start the work very soon.  So, he expresses the hopes that it could get special consideration for DPP approval.

It is expected that the Chinese authorities will be able to start work only after the approval of the DPP.  The Chinese delegation said that their design, instrument, equipment and furniture list is in final stage.  They will call the tender only after DPP approval.  Discussions were also held on how to further cooperate with the Chinese authorities.

CMC Hospital Director said that the hospital building and equipment will be provided by China.  But we have to provide manpower.  A Development Project Proposal (DPP) has been made after reviewing these.  If it is approved, I hope to start the work.  They (China) will complete all the work within the next three months. The work will start in January-February next year.

The burn unit to be built with Chinese financing will have 6 floors. It will have 10 ICUs, 20 HDUs, three operation theaters along with 150 beds. The building will have all the modern facilities at a cost of around Tk 120 crore.  It will take 22 months to implement this project.

Later, the Chinese delegation visited the construction site and expressed great satisfaction over the progress of work there.  Later, after a discussion in a very cordial atmosphere, they left the hospital after visiting its different wards.  The head of Sheikh Hasina Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, Dr Samant Lal Sen along with members of CMC Hospital and the Chinese delegation were present.

The Chinese representatives said that the geological survey has been completed.The machinery for the work will also be brought within this month. After completing all kinds of paperwork, they will start the physical infrastructure work.

mentionable that the Ministry of Health said that the DPP will go to the Ministry of Planning in the next few days after the approval of the Ministry of Finance.
