Cloudburst cripples life across country

More rain likely over 72 hours

From south to west, incessant rain has disrupted daily lives across the country with some districts recording highest ever rainfall in over a decade.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), mid-western district of Rajshahi, western Kushtia and south-central Faridpur have recorded the highest rainfalls.

In the last 24 hours, Rajshahi recorded 244 mm of rainfall – the highest till date for the district. Faridpur recorded 129.9 mm of rain, which is the highest in the entire year, and Kushtia recorded the highest rainfall this season at 116 mm.

Dhaka has been experiencing continuous rainfall since Thursday, causing inconvenience for office-goers and commuters. While the intensity of rain had reduced a little in the preceding days, it has regained momentum since Thursday in all eight divisions, including Dhaka. In the capital, traffic came to a standstill for hours on roads.

Residents from other districts reported that water seeped into office spaces, schools, and courts, even into their homes. It has become increasingly difficult to step outside for the locals. Many streets have become submerged in knee-deep water, with people resorting to small boats in order to cross roads. In some areas, people were seen throwing nets in a bid to catch fish.

Rajshahi city has witnessed its 10-year's highest rainfall that inundated various important parts of the city and caused suffering to its dwellers. Many houses in different parts of Rajshahi, city, including Bospara and Terokhada area, have been inundated due to continuous rain. The secondary school test examinations in some schools have been postponed.

Heavy rainfall has also caused extensive waterlogging in many areas of Mymensingh city. Houses, shops, and markets have been inundated in water due to incessant rain starting from Thursday evening. Many people have spent sleepless nights as rainwater has entered their homes.

Paddy fields in the upazilas of the district are currently submerged due to heavy rainfall. Many ponds and fish enclosures in various areas have been washed away. Several areas of the district including Ganginarpar, Bashbari Colony, Dhopakhola, Charpara, Notun Bazar, Station Road, Nayapara, Brahmapally, Kalibari, Gulkibari, Amlapara, Bhatikashar in Mymensingh city have gone under waist-deep water.

Torrential rains have led to waterlogging and overflow of drains in various parts of Gazipur city causing huge public sufferings. Vehicular movements were disrupted due to waterlogging at some places on the highway, including the Bhogra intersection. An 8-km-long traffic jam on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway from Chandana Chowrasta to Rajendrapur intersection in Gazipur was seen on Friday.

Similarly, Kushtia residents have said the city roads have been completely submerged in rainwater as well as causing traffic congestion.

In Natore, heavy rains damaged Aman paddies in over 2,000 hectares in Singra and Naldanga upazilas. The downpour also damaged vegetables on vast tracts of land in the affected areas,

Situation to prevail next few days

Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions; at many places over Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and at a few places over Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country.
