A mobile court at Sapahar upazila in Naogaon on Friday sealed off a private clinic and sentenced its director to one month rigorous imprisonment after a photo went viral showing that the director having no medical degree took part in a surgery.
The mobile court, led by upazila nirbahi officer Md Abdullah Al Mamun, sealed off Sotota Clinic and Nursing Home at Sapahar municipality area and sentenced its director Monirul Islam Swapan.
UNO Abdullah Al Mamun said that a picture of Monirul, who was an eighth grader, went viral on social media on Thursday night where he was seen taking part in a surgery at the clinic. ‘We conducted a raid at the clinic on Friday morning and found various irregularities’, he said, adding that the clinic did not have any valid documents from the concerned authorities. The UNO said that they did not find any doctor at the hospital although there should be a full-time doctor at the clinic round the clock.
He said that Monirul and his wife used to take part in the surgery as doctor’s assistants though the duo did not have any degree or medical certificate.
The UNO said that the hospital authorities could not provide them the name of the doctors who performed the surgeries including caesarean sections and any prescription although there were three caesarean patients undergoing treatment at the clinic.
He said that they sealed off the clinic as it was running without any approval from the authorities concerned and did not have necessary doctors and nurses as well as a suitable treatment environment.
‘We have also fined Monirul Tk 6,000, in default of which he would have to serve seven more days in jail’, he added.
Earlier, on June 1 past year, the upazila administration fined the same institution Tk. 5,000 for not having any approval from the authorities concerned and necessary doctors, nurses, manpower, materials and equipment to run the clinic.
However, the authorities did not take any step to close it then until the picture of the hospital’s director taking part in surgery went viral on social media.
