It is very disconcerting news that every year thousands of people fall prey to the heinous rackets setup by human traffickers. Especially since the women and children are the prime victims of this crime in Bangladesh.
And even more unacceptable circumstance is that over the past eight years, 6,134 human trafficking cases have been filed across the country, with only 233 being cleared and only 54 people convicted.
The victims of these trafficking rackets go on to enter the modern slave trade, which generates more than $150 billion worldwide. Often times there are people who can never return back to their home.
And under such circumstances when there is such a staggering number of unresolved cases of human trafficking it provokes conscious people to think how effectively is this problem being countered in the country.
The exploitation of human beings is one of the worst
crimes imaginable and we hope that there is nothing
that will stop our law enforcement from bringing
human trafficking to an end
According to a report published in this daily there are numerous cases pending. Of these, several hundred persons were accused in these cases.
But due to the weak charge-sheets and failure to bring witnesses, most of the accused were acquitted. It is also known that many of the accused got bail in high court whereas the cases were non-bailable. This means that there is a certain loophole in the justice system which the accused human traffickers are able to exploit to their benefit.
Moreover, the report also shows that these accused are now ‘untouched’ by the law enforcers due to their strong lobbying during the investigation period.
This is a clear violation of the way law enforcement and justice should be carried out in the country. Since the phrase goes – no one is above the law, this means that proper enforcement is lacking in case of such circumstances.
As long as there is will of the concerned government offices and the law enforcers carry out their duties properly there is no way for human trafficking to survive in the country.
The exploitation of human beings is one of the worst crimes imaginable and we hope that there is nothing that will stop our law enforcement from bringing human trafficking to an end.
