More than 3 lakh animals have been sacrificed in different areas of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). However, only 1.33 percent or around 4,000 animals have been slaughtered at the designated spots of the DNCC.
Multiple places were pre-determined in each ward for animal sacrifice. The areas were facilitated with many materials and water was provided for slaughtering animals. Moreover, a fan was provided for the comfort of the workers. The city corporation even provided snacks.
However, all the efforts went in vein as most of the people sacrificed their animals either on the streets in front of their houses or in the garage of the houses.
DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam expressed sorrow at a press conference on cleaning and management. He said that the country is developing, but the concept and method of sacrifice is still immature.
He also said that despite having all kinds of facilities, there was not much interest among the people to carry out the customs in the provided places.
The mayor said that the slaughterhouse in Mohammadpur had 25 freezer vans, which also included all kinds of facilities. However, not even 100 cows were brought to that place.
He said, “I have personally asked many people to know their reluctance about coming to the slaughterhouse. They showed many excuses. None were valid.”
The mayor further said the sacrifice will have to be made at the designated spots next year where the corporation will decide. Apart from this, no sacrifice can be made here and there.
The mayor sated that the help and cooperation of local MPs, landlords, social activists and welfare societies and educators will be required for this.
The mayor said that if the sacrifice is made at the designated place, the task of cleaning the waste can be done easily and quickly. The work can be done at a much lower cost than the cost that the corporation is bearing to remove the waste generated from sacrifices done elsewhere all around the DNCC areas.
