Chuadanga district is the top position for maize cultivation in the country, District Agriculture Extension Department sources added. According to Chuadanga Agriculture Extension Department the target has been fixed for maize cultivation on 46121 hectares of land whereas farmers have taken up maize cultivation on 48800 hectares of land this year.
Of the total 15120 hectares of land has been cultivated it in sadar upazila, 13700 hectares of land in Alamdanga upazila, 14760 hectares of land in Damurhuda upazila and 5220 hectares of land in Jibannagar upazila.
Mohammad Ali Hasan, Deputy Director of Chuadanga Agriculture Extension Department told the Bangladesh Post Chuadanga is the top maize cultivation district in the country. About 60 per cent land of cultivable areas have been taken up under maize cultivation in the district. It is learnt that farmers cultivated the maize varieties 987,981,7720,4455,3350 and V-92 in their fields. They irrigate four or five times in the maize crops up to harvesting period.
Habibur Rahman, a farmer of village Hazrahaty in sadar upazila of the district said he has cultivated maize on seven bighas of land. It has become about to harvest. `I am pleased to see the condition of maize.' Tariqul Islam, a farmer from Majhhad village in Alamdanga upazila told this correspondent that he has taken under maize cultivation on 5 bighas of land.
Golam Mollik of village Gobindahuda in Damurhuda upazila of the district said 9 bighas of land has been taken under maize cultivation by him.
Abdul Kuddus, a businessman of maize in Chuadanga told the Bangladesh Post wholesalers from different parts of the country, CP Bangladesh, local businessmen and local forius purchase maize with fair price. Sufi Rafiquzzaman, Additional Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department said production cost of maize is low, less diseases, bumper production and available marketing facilities. For these reasons farmers are very eager to cultivate maize crops.
Mohammad Ali Hasan, Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department said field staffs of the department always assist the farmers according to their necessity.
