Chittagong Port, the country’s main seaport, has advanced six notches in container-handling in the 2019 edition of Lloyd’s List, reports BSS. According to the Lloyd’s List survey report posted on its website, Chittagong Port secured the 64th position in 2019 among top 100 ports across the world. The rank of the port was the 70th in the year 2018.

In the 2018, Chittagong Port handled 29,03,996 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers, up 8.90 percent from 26,67,223 TEUs in 2017. The Chinese port Shanghai and the Singapore port have taken the first and the second positions respectively while the Chinese ports Ningbo-Zhoushan, Shenzhen and Guangzhou were respectively in third, fourth and fifth positions.

Indian Jawaharlal Nehru Port secured the 28th position while Mundra port was in the 36th position. Chittagong Port is ahead of Pakistan’s Port of Karachi, which was ranked 83rd. Talking to BSS, Member (Administration and Planning) of the Chittagong Port Authority Md Zafar Alam said the new position indicates that the economic activities of the country are increasing gradually.

“The country’s export and import are on the rise. Different mega projects are being implementing for developing the country’s infrastructure,” he added. He hoped that the position of Chittagong Port will improve further in future.
