The affairs of Hong Kong are purely China's internal affairs and the Chinese government is determined and confident to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, said Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Hua Chunying during Tuesday's press conference, reports CGTN.
Hua made the remarks while commenting on China's top legislature's adoption of the amended annexes to the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
China will continue to implement the principles of "One Country, Two Systems" and "patriots administering Hong Kong," Hua said, stressing that any foreign attempts to meddle in Hong Kong's affairs and to pressure China will never succeed.
The improvement of the electoral system provides an institutional guarantee for the principle of "patriots administering Hong Kong" and the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, she stressed.
The two amended annexes adopted Tuesday fully demonstrate the resolution and common will of the Chinese people, including Hong Kong compatriots, she said.
"We believe that the improved electoral system will further promote the political and social environment, the rule of law and the business environment in Hong Kong and usher in an even brighter future for Hong Kong's development," she added.
