Only green chillies are sold in the market of Melapanga village of Domar upazila of Nilphamari district. That is why it is locally known as 'Moricher Haat' which means chilly market. The market is famous for chillies in the north. The activities start from morning in this market and continues till afternoon.

At least 12-15 thousand maunds of chilli are sold in this market every day. The price of which is two to four crore Tk per day. Talking to the local pepper grower Bablur Rahman, it is known that as pepper growing has increased in the area surrounding the market, the number of pepper traders has also increased. Apart from Domar, Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas, hundreds of pepper farmers from neighboring Panchgarh's Debiganj upazila come to sell pepper in this market.

There are more than a hundred stalls in this market, which was developed only for the pepper business. These stalls are open all day in the footsteps of buyers and sellers from far and wide. Wholesalers buy pepper in different parts of the country by truck.

Antajul Haque, the president of the market committee, said that this market sits for about four months in a year during the pepper season. At that time, buying and selling of pepper went on seven days a week. The pepper here goes to different parts of the country including Dhaka, Chittagong, Sirajganj, Pabna, Naogaon, Jashore, Satkhira, Kushtia, Khulna. He also said that this market is a popular one in the entire Nilphamari district but we are not getting any support from the government even though we have informed the administration in various ways for the development of the market. If the agriculture department takes a good look, we will be able to overcome some obstacles and progress further in the future.

Small piles of pepper can be seen on the surface in the market while visiting there. Arif Mia, a pepper grower of Nilphamari Jaldhaka Upazila, said that it cost 30-35 thousand taka to cultivate pepper on my three bigha land. I have sold about lakhs of Tk worth of pepper. If the weather is good, I can sell another lakh Tk worth of pepper.

Afzal Hossain, a pepper grower, said that pepper traders from far and wide are coming in to buy pepper in trucks based on this pepper market. Due to this, the farmers of the area are interested in pepper cultivation by getting the price of pepper and pepper has now become a major cash crop in the region.

Local Aminur Rahman said, we have been doing business in this market for only four months. When the pepper runs out, the market becomes deserted, resulting in reduced sales. We run for 12 months with these four months of income.

When we spoke to Mujibur Rahman, a wholesaler from Kushtia, he said that this is a famous pepper market in the northern region. He has been buying chillies from this market for years. From here, he buys different varieties of chillies. There is no money transaction or additional hassle.

Jewel Rana, the proprietor of M/s Rakib Traders, the market stall of the hut, said that chillies are bought from here and sold in Dhaka and Chittagong. He said that the pepper of this market is very popular in Dhaka and Chittagong.

Neyamul, another vendor, said that pepper was bought from here and taken to Khulna by truck. Demand for pepper depends on imports. Still, pepper is taken to Khulna by three to four trucks every day.

About 20 truckloads of chilli go to different parts of the country from this market every day, said wholeseller Merajul Islam. He said that in the morning, he bought chillies in the market and in the evening they were sent to Rajshahi by truck.
