A three-year-old boy has died after a lychee seed got stuck in his throat in Nabinagar, Brahmanbaria.
The incident took place around 9am on Saturday at Bhairabnagar village under Biddayakutup union of the upazila. The deceased, Abu Bakr, was the son of Tarek Zia.
At the time of the incident, he was visiting his grandfather’s house in Bhairabnagar.
According to the family, Abu Bakr's grandfather brought lychees from the market in the morning. While playing, Abu Bakr was eating the lychees when a seed suddenly got lodged in his throat.
He was unable to breathe and eventually lost consciousness. Family members first took him to a local doctor. Later, he was taken to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Nabinagar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Razzak said they heard about the incident from locals and are looking into the matter.
Earlier on May 5, a similar tragedy occurred in Sherpur’s Nalitabari upazila, where a four-year-old boy named Robiul Islam died after choking on a lychee seed.
Robiul, son of Rezaul Islam, was eating lychees at home when a seed got stuck in his throat.
Despite attempts by the family and being rushed to the Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex, he was declared dead upon arrival.
