Amid a hike in prices of edible oil and rice, the chicken has added to the woes of the consumers in Dhaka which the traders blaming on a supply crunch due to the pandemic situation and the increased demand for various ceremonies, picnics and weddings.
Prices of chicken, eggs and vegetables shot up during the week while price of onion came down. On the other hand, prices of edible oil, rice and other products remain unchanged.
While visiting different kitchen markets in the capital, including Karwan Bazar, this correspondent found such price variations of essential commodities on Friday.
Sonali chickens were selling at Tk 330 per kg an increase of Tk 50 over two weeks and broiler chickens at Tk 150 to 160 per kg. Layer chickens were selling at Tk 200 to Tk 210 per kg. Local chicken was selling at Tk 450 per kg. Broiler chicken eggs were selling at Tk 90 per dozen an increase of Tk 5, duck eggs were selling at Tk 135 and local chicken eggs at Tk 200.
Ibrahim Poultry Bitan proprietor Ibrahim told this correspondent that the production of chickens at the farms is low. On the other hand, price of chicken was going up in the retail market due to the increased demand for various ceremonies, picnics and weddings.
The prices of beef and mutton, spices and other commodities remain unchanged in these markets. Mutton was selling at Tk 700 to Tk 750 per kg, and beef at Tk 580 per kg.
In Karwan Bazar, it was found that, onion was selling at Tk 35 per kg while it was being sold at Tk 40 last week.
In the vegetable markets, it was found that bean was selling at Tk 60 per kg, tomatoes at Tk 30 per kg, turnip at Tk 60 per kg, brinjal at Tk 50, cucumber at Tk 40, papaya at Tk 30, bitter gourd at Tk 60, okra at Tk 40, and carrots were being sold at Tk 30 per kg, cauliflower and cabbage were selling at Tk 20 per piece and gourd was being sold at Tk 40 per piece. Lemon price was also high.
At Karwan Bazar wholesale rice market it was found that, the price of all types of rice shot up by Tk 2 to Tk 4 per kg. Nazirshail was selling at Tk 68 to Tk 70 per kg. But last week it was sold at Tk 67 to Tk 68 per kg. Miniket which was selling at Tk 60 Tk 62 was being sold at Tk 64 Tk 65, similarly Atash rice was selling at Tk 52 to Tk 53 per kg while coarse rice was selling at Tk 48 per kg.
A wholesale rice trader Matin at Karwan Bazar said, “Indian rice import is low, while mill owners' syndication is also behind the price hike of rice”.
Chital fish was selling at Tk 450 to Tk 500 per kg, Awn fish at Tk 500, Rohi at Tk 250 to Tk 350 per kg, Katla at Tk 170 to Tk 280, Tilapia at Tk 130 to Tk 150, Boal fish at Tk 400 to Tk 500, Pangas was sold at Tk 120 to Tk 150, Pabda at Tk 150 to Tk 250, and Shing was being sold at Tk 300 to Tk 450 (based on quality and size) in these markets.
