Minister for the Local Government, Rural Government and Cooperative Md Tajul Islam on Saturday said two city corporations have appointed ten magistrates to run mobile courts to take disciplinary actions against the city dwellers who deliberately contribute to the breeding of mosquitoes around households.
He was speaking at the inaugural function of the 'Aedes Mosquito and Dengue, Chikungunya Awareness Campaign', organised by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in the capital's Mirpur yesterday.
The minister also said that despite repeated warnings to the city dwellers, they are contributing to the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes by storing water in and around their houses.
He further said that efforts are being made to create awareness among people by conducting field campaigns as it is difficult for the city corporation bodies to kill mosquitoes going door to door. The whole society cannot be harmed due to the negligence of a single person. It is, indeed a punishable offense not to destroy the breeding ground of mosquitoes, he added.
Tajul Islam said, "When it rains, water accumulates on the roof, in flower tubs, tires and tubes. In addition to these waters, Aedes mosquitoes breed in water stored in houses, basements and abandoned areas under construction. So, one has to be careful so that water does not accumulate in the furniture including the yard."
The Minister firther said the mosquito infestation has been significantly reduced due to the division of each ward of Dhaka City Corporation into 10 sub-zones and regular spraying of effective pesticides.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Atiqul Islam, senior secretary of the local government department Helaluddin Ahmed and actor-playwrighter Chanchal Chowdhury were present, among others.
Atiqul Islam, mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), called on the city dwellers to prevent dengue and Chikungunya.
The mayor said that the whole world including Bangladesh is in the Covid-19 pandemic today. In order to prevent dengue and Chikungunya deaths during this period, this public awareness programme on Aedes mosquito eradication has been started simultaneously in all areas of Dhaka North City Corporation.
Atiqul Islam said, "Rain after sun and sun after rain- such weather plays a helpful role in the spread of Aedes mosquitoes. So everyone must be careful.”
