Chattogram Challengers win low-scoring thriller

Chattogram Challengers won a low scoring thriller in the Bangladesh premier League Cricket defeating Dhaka Dominators by 15 runs on Tuesday.

Chattogram Challengers deciding to bat first could manage to score only 118 runs for eight wickets but defended the paltry total with a disciplined bowling performance later on to book Dhaka for 103 runs.      

In a match of just to maintain the formalities of the competition, held at the Sher-e Bangla National Stadium, riding on 30 off 29 balls from middle order batter Usman Khan and quick-fire 34 of 20 balls by Ziaur Rahman at the late order, Chattogram Challengers managed to score 118 runs. As Dhaka Dominators and the Chattogram Challengers have been ousted from the top four competitions, their match turned into only to maintain the formalities.

Chattogram batters started to struggle from early stage with losing the first wicket on 18 runs by 4.4 overs, could get rid of the trouble as they were reduced to 21 runs five wickets by 6.2 overs and it looked it would be very tough task for the Port City bound team to reach at least to three digit score.

Chattogram’s disaster began with opener Irfan Sukur offering his wicket scoring seven runs with team’s 18 and his opening partner Mehedi Maruf followed him shortly being run out adding no run in the scorecard.

Unmukt Chand and Afif Hossain, coming to rebuild the innings pushing the side in more trouble after getting out shortly, in a span of three runs.

Unmukt Chand got out for a duck when Afif Hossain, who could take the responsibility to bail out the team from the danger, disappointed much giving the catch to Al-Amin Hossian to become second victim of Arafat Sunny.

Usman Khan, who rescued Chattogram from a huge debacle, played a valuable 44 runs partnership before being trapped lbw by Arafa Sunny with the scoreboard showing 72 for seven. FinallyZiaur Rahman played the most precious innings of unbeaten 34 from 20 deliveries to steer the Chattogram to reach to a respectable 118 runs in stipulated 20 overs for eight wickets.

Ziaur Rahman hit a couple of sixes and three fours in his rapid 34 runs innings.

Arafat Sunny claimed four wickets for 22 runs I his four overs spell.

Chasing to a moderate target, Dhaka Dominators also looked to see an early collapse when openers Abdullah Al Mamun and Soumya Sarker went to dressing room cheaply scoring only 22 runs in opening pair.

Soumya, who tipped off to play a dependable innings in a low scoring match, scored only 21 off 16 balls with three fours before being bowled by Campher followed by his partner Al Mamun went scoring only two runs.

After the openers’ departure it looked Dhaka Dominators also going to fall into trouble as they lost the third wicket on 35th run by 6.6 overs and were reduced to 67 for four in 11,2 overs.  

Captain Nasir Hussain and wicketkeeper Zahiduzzaman regarded in their approach when they rotated the strike at every chance possible.

But Nashir Hussain left the team on 88 for five in 16 overs when he was out for 24 from 33 deliveries after collecting only 21 runs in fifth wicket partnership with Zahiduzzaman.

At this stage it turned something tough for Dhaka to score 41 runs in last four overs to win the match and Chattogram bowlers just restricted the hoe side (Dhaka) on 103 runs when last five batters could not score double digit.

CurtiesCampher, ShuvagataHom, ZiaurRahman  NihaduzzamanMrittunjoy Chowdhury were very disciplined to stop Dhaka on 103 runs sharing nine wickets among them.

But Saouth African born, belongs to Irish passport CurtiesCampher was the successful bowlers with taking three wickets for 15 runs in his four overs spell.
