Char people of Jamalpur get modern facilities, more to come

Published : 07 Apr 2022 08:41 PM

The standard of living of the people in the remote chars of Jamuna River in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur district is increasing day by day.  For centuries, the people of the char areas have been neglected and deprived of modern facilities.  Where kerosene lamps, hurricanes, or candles were their only hope.  As evening approached, it would get dark.  Now there is being illuminated by electricity.

Road paving, construction of bridges and culverts are changing the image of the market in the char area, the rays of light have spread to every house of the remote char areas.  Small and medium scale industries are developing. It has been reported that at the request of UP Chairman Joynal Abedin, a total development project has been started.  Among the projects, construction of new power transmission lines with submarine cable along the bottom of Jamuna River at a cost of Taka 20 crore and supply of electricity to char areas has been started.  Apart from this, construction work of roads, paved bridges, culverts and market set houses is in progress at a cost of around Tk 40 crore.  Every house is now illuminated by electric lights.

Residents of Kajla village including Abdul Haq, Azhar, Charshenganiya's Kasem Mandal, Torab Ali Char Shishuar Mofazzal Belal and other locals said, "We have never imagined before that we will be blessed with modern facilities.  Sheds will be constructed in the hot-market including tax.  In this developmental activity of the present government, the standard of living of the people of Charbasi has improved a thousand times.  So we are very happy.”

In this regard, the Chairman of Sapdhari UP, Joynal Abedin  said, for a long time people in the char areas have been living in the face of severe river erosion, flood, drought and various natural disasters.  The people of Char were neglected. After I became the chairman, the people of Char area are no longer like before as the local MP has taken various development steps through the Minister of State for Religion Alhaj Faridul Haque Khan Dulal to improve the quality of life of the remote Char people.  In the wake of Basir's demand, under the direction of Minister of Religion Alhaj Faridul Haque Khan Dulal MP and with the overall cooperation of Upazila Parishad Chairman Jamal Abdun Naser Babul, various roads have been paved and bridge culverts have been constructed.  So we Charbasi are forever grateful to the present government.

Now our demand is one and the same, during the great freedom fighters of 1971, the sanctuary of the freedom fighters was roaming freely in Katapur Bazar in Sapdhari Union, hence the name Mukti Bazar was given to the market.  After the eighties, the market disappeared due to the erosion in Jamuna River.  After 2005, huge chars arose in Katapur area.  Thus a new market can be built there.

Asked about this, State Minister for Religion Alhaj Faridul Haque Khan Dulal MP said, "Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the worthy daughter of Bangabandhu, has promised that village will be city."

Therefore, it is possible to implement various development activities of the Jamuna archipelago in 6 unions of Islampur upazila.
