Nityananda, a man in Kaliganj upazila of Shatkhira has spent 18 years of his life being chained in a hole. Recently, this tragic incident has come to light through journalist investigation. Upon receiving the news, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mozammel Haque Russell visited his village and freed the man of his chains on the orders of the Deputy Commissioner. The district administration has already taken responsibility for his treatment.
It is alleged that the man’s mother and younger brother are responsible for his terrible condition. Nityananda is the son of Manoranjan Sardar of Rathkhola village of Kushalia union under Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira.
He passed SSC in the first division from Kushalia Collegiate School in South Sripur. He asked for Tk 15 thousand from his parents for opening a poultry farm. However, his family tied him to a tree with chains following a dispute regarding the incident. Since then he has been living chained in a hole behind his house. The man is now speechless, has long matted hair, does not wear clothes and does not even eat properly.
Deputy Commissioner SM Mostafa Kamal said all preparations have been made to take the man to Pabna Mental Hospital within the next two days. He also said that he would look into why the man was chained for 18 years. The locals demanded that Nityananda be treated and brought back to a healthy normal life.
