The government’s decision to issue ‘Fit for Human Consumption’ certificate to the exporters, will grow the country’s

overall agro and other processed food exports significantly.

Bangladesh exporters had to face various difficulties in exporting agro products as they did not have any ‘Fit for Human Consumption’ certificate. It was noticed that many foreign countries stopped importing agro or other processed products from Bangladesh as those products had been exported there without proper quality assurance and health certificate.

Now the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) conducts test of the agro or other processed food products items at a government-designated laboratory and then issue the certificate within next seven days of the application.

The country’s businessmen are now exporting the agro and processed food items without facing any question from the importing countries as they obtain ‘Fit for Human Consumption' certificate according to their requirements. In this regard, the government should form a specialised institution to certify the export products immediately as it has already taken a decision on it.

Authorities concerned and exporters should

have sufficient information on what type of

quality assurance is needed for which country

Also, the authorities concerned and exporters should have sufficient information on what type of quality assurance is needed for which country. Apart from these, the government will also have to take various measures to increase the demand in foreign market.

On the other hand, the businessmen will also have to visit the foreign countries, and should get in touch with foreign traders. And this is the best measure to promote trade. Some Asian and European countries, like Taiwan and Britain seek ‘Fit for Human Consumption’ certificate while importing agricultural and food items from Bangladesh and some other countries.

Simultaneously, our traders must remain cautious as the export of various agricultural and food products would require sanitary and phytosanitary certification as usual.

We also think such issuance of health certificate will inspire the farmers to cultivate various agriculture foods including vegetables and they will continue to grow those products.  And such move will also ensure the farmers to get a fair price from the exporters.
