Central bank to release Tk 200 bank note

Country’s banks and financial institutions, beside various government, non-governmental, political and sociocultural organisations, have also taken various programmes to celebrate the ‘Mujib Year’, the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Bangladesh Bank will release bank notes of Tk 200 for the first time to celebrate the ‘Mujib Year’ as well as the golden jubilee of independence. The central bank will also issue four commemorative coins. Besides, ‘Mujib Corner’ will be set up in all public and private banks, sources said.

‘Mujib Corner’ will be established at 41 private banks together. The proposal mainly have come from Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB), a body representing the owners of private commercial banks in Bangladesh. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Mujib Corner at the BAB office on January 6 at Jabbar Tower in Gulshan in the capital.

‘Mujib Corner’ will be set up in all 64 districts of the country. Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) is doing the necessary work in this regard. The corner will contain shelves with books, documentaries and pictures on Bangabandhu's life and works and history of the War of Liberation. Various programmes will also be taken from this corner aiming to inform next generation about the contribution of Father of the Nation.

About the preparations in this regard, Chairman of ABB and Managing Director (MD) of Eastern Bank, Ali Reza Iftekhar said, “Mujib Corner will be built in all the private banks of Bangladesh. This will be the best way to honour and remember Bangabandhu. Various arrangements have already begun, including the design, volume, and construction of the Corner. Initially, a ‘Mujib Corner’ will be set up at the headquarters of all the banks. Then it will spread all over the country. As a part of this, Eastern Bank is also in the process of constructing Mujib Corner.”

Mercantile Bank MD and CEO Kamrul Islam Chowdhury said, "Bangladesh could not have been an independent country without the leadership of Father of the Nation and the Bangalee nation could not have got its dignity and self-identity as an independent nation. So to remember Bangabandhu, I will set up two Mujib Corners in Mercantile Bank. Initiatives have been taken to construct a Mujib Corner in the head office and another at Chattogram.”

Besides, other programmes will also be observed on the basis of the directive of Bangladesh Bank, he added. In this regard, MD of Standard Bank Khandaker Rashed Maqsood said, "Great preparations are underway in the banking sector. In particular, Mujib Corner will be set up in a very glorious way.”

MD of Pubali Bank Abdul Halim Chowdhury said, "Everyone should know our history and traditions, especially the younger generation. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman struggled all through his life to give us a free nation. We must realize this deeply. That is why all the banks are organizing various programmes. As a part of this, all banks have taken initiative to establish Mujib Corners.”

BAB has already constructed Mujib Corner that contains several photographs of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and contents on him. Southeast Bank MD M Kamal Hossain said, “Initiatives has been taken to establish Mujib Corner so that the present generation can know Bangabandhu. This Corner will more look like a library where books and rare pictures of Bangabandhu and independence and various quotes will be arranged in layers.

Massive preparations are underway centring for the celebration of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Multiple cultural and social programmes have also been outlined to mark the special occasion to be held across the country.

‘Mujib Year’ will be celebrated from March 17, 2020, to March 17, 2021. The countdown for the birth centenary celebration of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman began on the historic Homecoming Day of Bangabandhu, January 10, 2020 through a gala opening ceremony.
