Yesterday marked the birth centenary of our great leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This is a time for us to reflect on our past and move forward with greater zeal. In order to achieve the Sonar Bangla of Bangabandhu’s dream, we have to continue to work for our nation tirelessly.

On 17th March, 1920, Bangabandhu was born to Sheikh Lutfar Rahman and Sayera Khatun in Tungipara of Gopalganj. His birthday is also being observed as National Children’s Day, as Bangabandhu enjoyed spending time with children especially on his birthdays.

In anticipation of Mujib Barsho, the government has taken several initiatives in the last few months, keeping the ideals of our great leader in mind. Bangabandhu is and always has been a guiding light for the nation since its inception. Once upon a time, the country was simply an idea that our great leader dared to dream about. Today, the country’s growth and progress is unparalleled in the whole world.

The UN General Assembly, UNESCO, has decided to jointly celebrate the Mujib Year with Bangladesh at the UNESCO 40th General Assembly. The decision was made in the presence of all UNESCO members on November 25, 2019. The year-long celebration will continue till 17th March 2021 and several organizations, both public and private have taken initiatives to mark the occasion.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has previously stated that the government wants to make Bangladesh free from hunger and poverty, and a developed country as dreamt by Bangabandhu. Bangladesh has already achieved remarkable success in the development sector and has graduated from a (least developed nation) LDC to a developing nation.

Through observing Mujib Barsho, the government wants to highlight Bangabandhu’s life and works to the people of the country, especially the new generation. Undoubtedly, each and every individual of the country should get to know Bangabandhu and his ideals in life. In order to become a developed nation, all of us must work with the same dedication and determination which Bangabandhu possessed.
