As per the pledges of Sheikh Hasina’s government, the Palli Bidyut Samity (PBS) in Jhenidah has connected 100 per cent of the houses both in rural and urban areas with power supply which has been lightening the houses round the clock.  Now people of the remote area enjoy light, fan, television, rice cooker even the electronic devices like computer and other accessories staying at home. It has been removing the deference of the people between the rural and urban.

When Bangladesh Post’s Roving Correspondent talked to a number of power subscribers under the office of the deputy general manager in Shailkupa of Jhenidah, came to know that a household might be connected with power supply within a week if the primary work of the aid house is completed.

Farmer Ayub Ali and his wife Misri Khatun at their homestead during connecting power supply for them for the first time at village Taminagar, said they were very happy as they are getting new connections with an amount of Taka 565. They had been using kerosene lamp or alternative light for casual purposes and study of the children which was costly for them. Now the family will enjoy adequate light and others with a minimum cost as required. Study of the children in the house will be now hassle-free, the couple said.

PBS deputy general manager in Shailkupa Mohammad Qamruzzaan said that the staff of the PBS are always in standby position to respond the services of the consumers. They do not entertain any delay and negligence in providing services for the people.

Office sources of the general manager of the PBS in Jhenidah said they have covered 6,509 kilometre line of 1,961 square kilometer area of Jhenidah Sadar, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur, Moheshpur, Shailkupa and Harinakundu upazilas with power coverage. The present figure of the subscribers is 365,383 including last year 1, 990.

Jhenidah PBS general manager (GM) Isahaque Ali said starting operation on January 9 of 1996, they have been currently receiving 52 megawatt power in pick hours, while 32 megawatt in off pick hours. The system loss reduced to 8.41 per cent last year than 11.20 of previous year.

Of the total, 13,320 are commercial, 359 deep tube wells, 5,702 non-deep tube wells, six low lift pumps, 4,147 charitable institutes, 1,478 general power and 41 street lights in the district. They had collected Taka 804884,652 in the last year where the recovery rate was 101 per cent.
