Today is the 16th of December, Victory Day for all Bangladeshis, and an iconic day which marked the end of the tough and emotional 9-month long Liberation War.

We have faced 5 decades since we have earned our freedom from the ugly and cruel clutches of Pakistani regime. But still, even after such a long time and coming so far into a future that is so well marked by development, there are anti-liberation forces active in the country working to hinder the path of progress.

Just before the whole of Bangladesh got liberated, the Pakistani occupying forces, sensing their impending defeat sought to cripple the brains of the nation and killed some brilliant and intellectual minds. This blood-bath marked the dimming of the light of intellectual growth in the newborn nation of Bangladesh.

Let us bathe in the winter sun and colour

ourselves in green and red and celebrate

the day with due solemnity

We passed a solemn day on December 14th observing the Martyred Intellectuals’ Day. Mourning and presenting tributes to all Intellectual Martyrs who had died brutally at the hands of the Pakistanis. Let us today rejoice in the celebrations of our Victory. However, in the festivities, we should not forget the hardships and death around us that has been present for the bigger part of the year in the guise of Covid-19 pandemic.

To celebrate this year’s Victory Day, let us stay indoors with our family and loved ones and look after each other. Also, be grateful to the Almighty for getting us through such a tough year. Let us bathe in the winter sun and colour ourselves in green and red and celebrate the day with due solemnity, not forgetting the fact that we were the ones who fought the trying war to achieve our freedom.
