Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin paid a courtesy call on Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday.

He met the Chief Adviser at the State Guest House Jamuna in the afternoon, Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder told BSS

Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin met Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus for the first time since the announcement of the tentative election timeline earlier this month.

The pre-scheduled meeting took place at the state guest house Jamuna and lasted around one and a half hours, said Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, deputy press secretary to the chief adviser.

The meeting comes days after Yunus said that the next parliamentary election could be held in the week before Ramadan in 2026 if all preparations are completed.

He added that sufficient progress in reforms and the trials of perpetrators of killings in the July uprising would be necessary to bring the election date forward from April.

The remarks followed a meeting in London with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on June 13, where Tarique suggested holding the election before Ramadan.

National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman later read out a joint statement outlining the possible schedule.

On June 15, CEC Nasir Uddin said the commission would be able to gauge the government's position on the election schedule only after formal discussions.

The EC and the government are yet to hold formal discussions on when the next national election should be, he added.

CEC on Saturday also said that a free and fair election is not possible without the cooperation of the government no matter how independent the election commission is.

The government will need to play a central role in conducting the election, he said while inaugurating a daylong training programme on electoral laws and regulations at the Electoral Training Institute in Dhaka.

The EC is advancing its preparatory work for the upcoming national polls.

The commission has also asked for information from authorities regarding minor repairs at educational institutions that are used or likely to be used as polling centres and is moving ahead with its polling centre policy.

As the constitutional body responsible for organising the polls, the commission has emphasised the need to remain fully prepared for the 13th parliamentary election,

The EC has already made significant progress in several key areas, including updating the voter list, finalising parliamentary constituency boundaries, registering new political parties as well as amendment to the several laws and rules.
