CDA urges Ctg city corpn to evacuate tilted building

Published : 07 Jun 2024 08:54 PM

A five-story building named Noboratna in the Bahir Signal area of Chattogram City has tilted, putting its residents at risk. The Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) has written to the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) to evacuate the building to prevent a major disaster.

CDA Authorised Officer Mohammad Hassan confirmed that the letter was sent on Thursday afternoon.

Hassan stated that a CDA team inspected the site after learning about the tilted building. They believe that the underlying soil has weakened due to the piling work for a nearby building. This has caused the gap between the upper parts of the Noboratna building and its adjacent building to shrink from 18 inches to just 6 inches. Since the CCC has the authority to order the evacuation of dangerous buildings, the CDA requested that they take action.

The residents of the Noboratna building have been asked to evacuate. The CDA has also summoned the owners of both buildings to present their approved designs for verification. This will help determine the exact condition of the Noboratna building.

It is noteworthy that a photo of the tilting Noboratna building, located next to the Buddhist temple in Baruapara of Bahir Signal, went viral on social media last Wednesday. This has caused fear among the residents of both the Noboratna building and the neighbouring buildings.
