Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain said, 'We will plant 10 lakh trees to build Green Chattogram to protect the environment and ensure a healthy, clean and green environment for children.'
He made this promise at the inauguration of the week-long Tree Fair-2025 organised by CCC at the city's Laldighi ground on Wednesday. Various types of trees are available in 61 stalls at the fair, and the curtain of the fair will come down on August 19.
City mayor said, "Trees are our best friends. Trees facilitate our survival by providing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide through the process of photosynthesis. From an Islamic perspective, tree planting is also a good deed - as long as the tree survives, good deeds will be recorded in the record book."
Reminiscing, he said that Bangladesh was once full of forest land and green trees. But due to uncontrolled encroachment, hill clearing and forest destruction, the green cover has decreased. Therefore, everyone should participate in tree plantation spontaneously. He emphasized on collective efforts to create a healthy, clean and green urban environment for children.
Addressing the students, the mayor said, “Instead of throwing garbage out the window or on the road, it should be thrown in a basket, it will not fill the drains and the environment will be protected. Brushing teeth before going to bed and in the morning, eating breakfast are helpful in the physical and mental development of children. Students will learn to work honestly and stand by a friend in danger.”
He explained the importance of planting and caring for trees to the students and urged them to develop clean habits.
CCC Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Muhammad Touhidul Islam presided over the meeting. CCC Secretary Ashraful Amin, Chief Education Officer Dr. Kissinger Chakma, Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman, Urban Planner Abdullah Al Omar, CCC departmental and branch heads, school students were present at the meeting.
