Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election is in complete uncertainty due to the corona situation. CCC elections were scheduled to be held on March 29, but the Election Commission postponed the CCC elections due to the outbreak of the corona virus.

The EC has not announced a new election date as the situation is not yet normal. In the meantime, the term of the current CCC mayor is coming to an end on August 5. In this case, the CCC administrator may be appointed at the end of the term.

Election Commission Secretary Mohammad Alamgir said the CCC scheduled mayor and councilor elections were not held on March 29 due to the corona situation.

The election was postponed on March 21. If the corona epidemic situation is not normal, Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) will not be elected. If the situation is normal, a new election date will be announced.

Incumbent Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin is holding the post of Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation. He was not nominated in the new election. His term as mayor ends on August 5.

Rezaul Karim Chowdhury has been nominated by Awami League for the post of mayor in the new election. Besides, BNP nominated candidate Dr. Shahadat Hossain. Candidates are now in a tactical campaign as the election is in uncertainty. Meanwhile, it is expected that the government may appoint a CCC administrator at the end of the term.

Incidentally, Chittagong City Corporation election was held on 28 April 2015. The term of those elected in that election will end on August 5, 2020.

Under electoral law, there is a provision for elections within 180 days prior to 5 August. Considering that calculation, the Chittagong City vote was announced on March 29.

But due to the corona situation, the Election Commission announced the postponement of the CCC vote on March 21. The EC did not announce a new election date until July 6.
