Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has been presented with a "Letter of Appreciation" by the Chattogram Samity London for his significant contributions to reducing waterlogging in the port city.
The award was conferred at a meeting held at Chattogram House in London, UK, on Sunday, recognising his efforts in substantially addressing the city's 30-year-old waterlogging problem within just one year of his term.
Upon receiving the honour, Mayor Dr. Hossain stated, "Waterlogging has been a long-standing problem for the people of Chattogram. Since taking office, I have taken its reduction as my biggest challenge. Within just one year, I have managed to halve this 30-year-old problem."
He outlined further plans, saying, "If we can restore water flow in the 21 unexcavated canals of the city and procure equipment for regular canal cleaning, it will be possible to permanently free Chattogram from waterlogging."
The Mayor also emphasised his broader vision for urban development, noting, "Urban development is not limited to just building drains or repairing roads. A modern old age home and free medical services for homeless and helpless senior citizens are the need of the hour."
Chattogram Samity London has promised to raise funds for waterlogging projects and expressed interest in cooperating on building a modern old age home and healthcare centre. Mayor Hossain has committed to providing land for this joint initiative.
The event was attended by Chattogram Samity London President Mohammad Nazim Uddin, General Secretary Mousumi Afrin Chowdhury Jaya, and other association leaders.
