Casefiled against ex-MP Nadvi, 16 others over Tk. 13cr embezzlement

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former MP Professor Dr. Abu Reza Muhammad Nezamuddin Nadvi and 16 others on charges of embezzling about 12 crore 80 lakh taka from the ‘IIUC Tower’ by International Islamic University Chattogram (IIUC) Trust.

ACC Deputy Assistant Director, Kamal Chakraborty filed the case as the plaintiff at the ACC Chattogram Integrated District Office-1 on Thursday.

The case was confirmed by Subel Ahmed, Deputy Director of ACC Chattogram Integrated District Office-1.

The other accused in the case are - IIUC former Vice-Chancellor Professor Anwarul Azim Arif, IIUC Tower Coordinator and Board of Trustees member Professor Kazi Deen Mohammad, Board of Trustees members Professor Saleh Zahur, Engineer Rashid Ahmed Chowdhury, Rizia Reza Chowdhury, Professor Fasiul Alam, Professor Abdur Rahim, Dr. Shamsuzzaman, Badiul Alam, two former registrars Professor Humayun Kabir and Shafiur Rahman, Tower Management members Professor Dr. Mahi Uddin, Afzal Ahmed and Mozaffar Hossain.

The income and expenditure money was kept in a separate bank account outside the main account of the university. From there, four hundred thousand dollars were sent to Saudi Arabia, which is a violation of the private university law, the ACC said.

The statement mentioned that from March 2021 to July 2024, the accused embezzled Tk 12 crore 79 lakh 41 thousand 556 from the trust. Although these funds were supposed to be used for educational scholarships, poor student assistance and social welfare, they were spent as personal allowances, honorariums, festival bonuses and foreign travel expenses. He used to receive honorariums of more than Tk 10 lakh every month, fuel and mobile bills. His wife Rizia Sultana also received Tk 30 lakh from the trust's funds for irregular allowances and medical expenses. The trust's policies and the private university law are against it.

Other members of the trust also enjoyed bonuses, allowances and unlimited fuel benefits. The case has been approved and. Action will be taken if anyone is found involved in the investigation, the ACC said.
