Chattogram port has achieved growth in cargo and ship handling despite global problems due to ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and global economic recession.
According to the 2022 survey of Lloyd's List, a London-based international shipping journal, Chattogram Port is ranked 64th in the list of top 100 container ports in the world, 3 steps ahead of last year.
In order to facilitate the commercial work, increasing the container capacity of the port, construction of Patenga container terminal, Karnaphuli capital dredging, bringing the level of piracy to zero and freeing the illegal occupation of Laldia Char.
From a recent document related to the Chattogram port of this government, the issue of achieving growth of the Chattogram port in the midst of the global recession has emerged. The introduction of direct shipping from Chattogram port to several ports in China and Europe reduces the time of goods transportation and also reduces import and export costs. Besides, the US Coast Guard-led ISPS has expressed satisfaction by monitoring the security system of Chattogram port. Coordinating all relevant agencies including port customs has reduced security risks and reduced waiting time for commercial vessels by removing old DG cargo from the port.
Chattogram port achieved 3 percent growth in cargo handling and 4 percent growth in vessel handling last fiscal, facing various economic challenges created globally due to global recession and Russia-Ukraine war.
While the level of container handling in most of the world's ports has declined drastically, Chattogram Port has retained its position in the prestigious US$ 3 million club. Chattogram port handled 3.14 million containers last year.
Newmooring Overflow Container Yard has been commissioned to increase the container capacity of the port. The yard is spread over 90 thousand 521 square meters and the yard can accommodate containers with a capacity of about 4 thousand TEUs. As a result, the overall container capacity of Chattogram Port has increased from 49 thousand 118 TEUs to 53 thousand 518 TEUs. As a result, ships arriving at the port can quickly unload their containers and proceed to the next destination, and various shipping lines are not able to impose any additional charges on the port. As a result, the overall import cost of goods has decreased.
Chattogram Port has established its position more firmly in the economic environment of the Corona world. Besides, the inspection team expressed their deep satisfaction by observing the overall security system of Chattogram port led by US Coast Guard ISPS very smoothly. The security risk has been reduced to a great extent by removing the old DG cargoes from the port premises by making various necessary coordination between the customs of Chattogram port and all other related institutions.
